How to deal with a workplace accident

Employees across Northern Ireland are entitled to work in a safe environment but unfortunately accidents can happen. If you’re injured in the workplace you should know what to do and how to proceed afterwards in the manner that leads to the best outcome for you. Here are some things you should consider.

Deal with the aftermath

If you had an accident at work you should have your injury treated immediately. If working alone, perhaps you have a method of sounding the alarm. If not, call out to your colleagues. Your workplace first-aider might take a look at you at this stage. In more serious situations an ambulance might be called. You should keep a record of any symptoms you develop in the aftermath of the accident and visit your GP or a hospital for treatment.

Report the accident

You should seek to report the accident to your colleagues and managers. This will mean that colleagues also at risk of injury can better avoid an accident of their own. Your manager is legally obliged to collect details and may have to report the incident to the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland. By being aware of the incident, your employer can take the necessary steps to prevent similar accidents occurring. If you can, it would be helpful to take photos or video of the area you had your accident. Don’t accept or deny liability for the accident, as it’s too soon to tell and you should speak with an expert.

Record your losses

You might require time off work to recover. If this is the case you should keep a record of your losses and expenses resulting from your injury. As an example, you might have loss of earnings or perhaps you had to pay for private medical treatment such as physiotherapy. If you decide to claim later, you can also claim for special damages such as these.
