Margaret was employed by Nortel Networks UK Ltd, formerly known as Standard Telephones & Cables. She worked there on and off again from the early 1980s to 2001 and carried out a variety of roles as the company evolved. However, whilst carrying out her roles she was consistently exposed to loud noises.
Margaret was not provided with hearing protection or any other form of personal protection equipment (PPE) for her ears.
As time passed following her time at Nortel, Margaret noticed that she required the volume of her television to be a progressively higher setting than she used to. Eventually, this got to the point that her children noticed that she was losing her hearing.
Margaret experienced ringing in her ears at night when she went to bed.
Margaret saw a Paschal O’Hare Solicitors’ advertisement for our specialist hearing loss claims service and realised that her hearing may be deteriorating due to her time working in loud environments. If her suspicions were correct, she was suffering from noise induced hearing loss. She contacted Seymour Major with a view to pursue a claim. Seymour took initial details of the case before sending Margaret for an audiogram hearing test by an independent consultant. The test results showed that the former Nortel employee was in fact experiencing deafness due to her previous exposure to noise at work. We issued proceedings to the insurers of the now closed Nortel who agreed with the assessment and settled Margaret’s case for £7,500.
