Ronald’s asbestos claim settles for £12,500 (Belfast)

Ronald was employed by the George Cohen Group between 1962 and 1985. The company were demolishing constractors and scrap dealers who originally had premises on Sydenham Road, Belfast.

Ronald’s job involved knocking down and clearing scrap from Belfast’s network of old mills.

He worked on approximately 10 mills in the Belfast Area. This involved stripping out boiler rooms and removing parts for scrap. As part of this job Ronald was involved in dislodging asbestos lagging. He was not provided with any protection whatsoever and was in contact with asbestos on an ongoing basis.

Unfortunately, Ronald suffers from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Whilst being examined by a doctor for an unrelated issue, pleural plaques was discovered in his lungs. Soon after, having heard a radio advert, Ronald contacted Paschal O’Hare Solicitors to pursue a claim for compensation.

A letter of claim was initiated against the insurers of the George Cohen Group.

We obtained a medical report from a consultant who confirmed the diagnoses of pleural plaques. This physician went on to consider the risk that our new client would develop serious forms of asbestos related illnesses. Fortunately for Ronald, it was concluded that the risk was very small indeed. Negotiations were undertaken and the pleural plaques claim settled in the sum of £12,500.
