Brendan’s work accident settles for £37,500 (Coleraine)

Brendan was involved in a work accident while he was employed in Coleraine. He was using a pressurised sprayer which had become jammed with air/oil. He was advised to put heat into the sprayer to try and get the oil to move out of it. The sprayer suddenly exploded and ignited, setting Brendan on fire. He sustained burns to his face, wrist and forehead.

He was taken to Causeway hospital before being transferred to the Burns Unit in the Royal Victoria Hospital. He initially spent a period as an inpatient before being discharged and then having to attend regularly to have dressings changed. A HSE investigation revealed that the wrong oil had been used for the task.

Brendan contacted our work accident solicitors

Brendan was concerned about his injuries and contacted our solicitors for help. We sent a letter of claim to Brendan’s employer and their insurers subsequently admitted liability.

We obtained a report from a Consultant Plastic Surgeon who confirmed that Brendan experienced severe pain for a few weeks following the accident and sleep disturbance. Issues with majority of function and daily living were resolved within approximately 7 weeks but he did have some ongoing issues with feeling of tightness and there was still some scarring visible which the Consultant advised should settle over a period of approximately 18 months. We also obtained a report from a Consultant Psychiatrist who diagnosed him as having suffered an Adjustment Disorder with resolution over 15 to 18 months anticipated.

We served the medical evidence on the insurers and eventually negotiated a settlement figure of £37,500.
