Ethan’s Hearing Loss Claim Belfast

Ethan’s Hearing Loss Claim Settles for £26,000 (Belfast)

Ethan worked for Belfast City Council for over 20 years, where he was regularly exposed to high levels of noise from refuse lorry crushers, wood crushers, and power hoses.

For a significant period, he was not provided with adequate hearing protection or proper health and safety guidance.

Over time, Ethan began to notice clear hearing difficulties. He struggled to hear on the telephone, needed to increase the volume on the television and radio, and developed a constant buzzing noise in his ears. This condition, known as Tinnitus, also affected his sleep, often delaying it by up to an hour each night.

Paschal O’Hare Solicitors Took On His Claim

When Ethan contacted Paschal O’Hare Solicitors, he had been aware of his hearing issues for around 10 years and suspected they were linked to noise exposure at work.

We took detailed instructions regarding his employment history and the impact on his daily life. We arranged for him to be assessed by an ENT consultant, who diagnosed:

  • Noise Induced Hearing Loss
  • Tinnitus

Following this, we carried out full investigations and formally notified the Council of the claim.

Proceedings and Settlement

Due to the nature of the case, proceedings were issued in the High Court of Northern Ireland. The Council arranged their own medical examination.

Shortly after, through focused negotiations, we secured a settlement of £26,000. Ethan’s legal costs were also paid by the Defendant.

Orla Shevlin, Solicitor, Commented:

“Ethan’s case shows how prolonged exposure to workplace noise can lead to lasting and life-altering conditions. By gathering strong medical evidence and presenting a clear case, we secured a settlement that reflects the impact this has had on his daily life.”
