Ian was working as a line patroller inspecting pylons near a farm in Ballinamanard, County Fermanagh, when a serious accident occurred. Heavy snow had been falling that day. While taking shelter in a covered area of the farm, he suddenly fell into an unmarked and unsecured slurry pit. The farm was owned by a company that had rented the land to a local farmer. Both denied responsibility. The company argued that the farmer was in charge of securing the pit, while the farmer claimed Ian had no right to be in that area and should have realised it was a slurry pit.
