Having a baby is such an exciting time. You will probably be thinking about whether you are having a boy or a girl, what to call your baby, what the labour will be like rather than any of the things that could go wrong. But things do go wrong sometimes, and if they did during your labour, your child may be suffering from Erbs Palsy.
If your child has been injured whilst you are giving birth, you will probably be feeling upset, guilty and a bit angry too. We do understand that you will have a real mixture of emotions. We can’t change what has happened to your child, but we can help you to understand that you are able to make a claim for compensation.
What Is Erbs Palsy?
Erbs Palsy is not a very well-known condition, but it happens mainly due to trauma at birth and can also be known as Brachial Plexus Paralysis.
This condition affects 1 or all of the 5 nerves which help the arm and hand to move and to have feeling. Damage to the Brachial Plexus nerve is usually caused by excessive force being used during labour, normally when the baby has its shoulder stuck on the mother’s pelvis, known as shoulder dystocia.
What Are The Symptoms of Erbs Palsy?
It may be obvious as soon as your baby is born that there is a problem with their arm as it may be rotated, with the hand extended out to the back, like a waiter getting a tip. Each child’s injury will be different though, because the severity of the injury and the damage will depend on a number of factors.
The nerves may only be bruised or they could be torn and as there are 5 nerves, the damage to each of them will be different. The level of paralysis will largely depend on the severity of the damage to the nerves and therefore if there is only bruising, the paralysis may not be permanent.
It is really important to get treatment for your child as soon as possible as this will improve their chances. Most babies with Erbs Palsy will recover, but there are a small number of between 5 and 20 percent who will suffer from a permanent disability.
