Farm accident claims in Northern Ireland

Farm Safety in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland’s idyllic countryside harbours a deadly secret – its farms are the most dangerous workplaces in the UK and Ireland.

In order to shed light on the dangers associated with farming, this blog will explore the impact of Northern Ireland’s farm accidents, the high-risk demographics, the types of accidents, and what can be done to improve farm safety. It provides an in-depth look into the silent crisis taking place in countryside.

The devastating impact of farm accidents in Northern Ireland

For more than a decade, farms across Northern Ireland have been the silent witnesses to tragedies that have claimed lives and left families devastated. In a report released by the Health and Safety Executive NI (HSENI), it was revealed that between January 2013 and December 2022, 53 people lost their lives in farming accidents in Northern Ireland. This alarming statistic equates to an average of more than five deaths per year.

The Farm Safety Foundation, now observing its 11th year of Farm Safety Week, has expressed concern over the slow pace of change in these figures. Stephanie Berkeley, the Foundation’s manager, emphasised the need for farmers to value their own lives above all. “Everything is replaceable, you are not,” she said. However, despite the significant concerns, there is a glimmer of hope. Ms Berkeley acknowledged that though progress is slow, farmers are taking their safety more seriously.

The high-risk demographic

The most vulnerable demographic are men aged over 60. In 2023, two fatalities were reported, both involving machinery mishaps with men within this age group. The downward trend from six deaths in 2021 to three in 2022 is encouraging, but the toll is still too high. William Irvine, deputy president of the Ulster Farmers Union, emphasised the need for constant safety awareness, particularly given the unpredictable nature of farm work.

Farming accidents often involve falls, animals, machinery, and slurry. The profession frequently requires solitary work with machinery and animals, adding to the risks. Mr Irvine stresses that while the safety message is starting to resonate, there is significant work yet to be done.

Common causes of farm accidents

At Paschal O’Hare Personal Injury Solicitors, we have witnessed first-hand the profound impact farm accidents can have on a person’s life. The aftermath of an accident extends beyond physical injuries, often leaving emotional scars and financial difficulties in its wake.

The most common farm accidents involve tractors, harvesters, livestock, machinery maintenance, chemical exposure, and slurry accidents. These accidents could be significantly reduced if farmers and agricultural workers take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
