Rise in Dog Attacks on Royal Mail staff in Northern Ireland

According to figures released by the Royal Mail, there’s been a disturbing rise in dog attacks on delivery staff in Northern Ireland.

In this blog, we’ll explore the details regarding this increase and conclude by discussing how our solicitors can help those that have been impacted by these attacks.

Dog Bite Incidents on the Rise

In an article published by the BBC, it was revealed that Northern Ireland has seen a concerning increase in dog attacks on Royal Mail staff, with 56 reported incidents in the last year, making it the second-highest in the UK. The number of dog attacks across the UK has also risen, with 1,916 incidents reported between April 2022 and March 2023, a 15% increase compared to the previous year.

In Northern Ireland alone, the incidents increased by 12% compared to last year’s 50 reported attacks. The BT postcode area has consistently appeared in the Top 10 list for dog attacks since 2013 and has even topped the list 4 times. Tunbridge Wells reported the highest number of incidents, with 65 postal workers suffering dog attacks during the year. Some of these attacks have led to permanent and disabling injuries, as noted by the Royal Mail.

The PDSA (People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals) has reported a steady rise in dog ownership in the UK over the past 3 years, with numbers growing from 9.6 million in 2021 to 11 million in 2023.

These figures were released during Dog Awareness Week, which promotes responsible dog ownership. Royal Mail urges dog owners to understand the potentially devastating impact of dog attacks on postal workers and take appropriate measures to ensure their pets pose no threat.
